Should the first lady be financially compensated?

Background reading

  • For first lady, free work but no free time
When incoming President Barack Obama meets with a world leader, attends a diplomatic dinner or reads to a roomful of rapt schoolchildren, he’ll be doing the work of the nation as well as earning his $400,000 annual salary. But when his wife attends the same functions at his side — or in his stead — she’ll be doing it for love.

Yes, she should be paid a salary because she'll be planning and hosting events on behalf of and for the benefit of the country.

The first lady should keep to charitable work and "playing the perfect hostess" as most wives of successful "presidents of all kinds" do.

For what? For what reason? The job belongs to her husband, if the household need the money, let her find a job, locally.

She can certainly stay home if she wants to. She is NOT an elected position. No pay.

Our first person faces the same scrutiny, utilizes their staff, and has to be "on" 24/7. A salary would legitimize their position

Military and corporate spouses often work to advance their partner's career. It's seen as a joint benefit.

If the president's spouse didn't want to "work for free," then the president elect should NOT have run for office. It comes with the turf.

If the First Lady is working on behalf of her country, then absolutely she should be compensated for her contributions.

Although the first lady does a lot, she's not elected or hired, so she can't be paid. Plus, she does get to live in the house for free.

No compensation? How about free child care, free housekeeping, free rent, free transportation anywhere in the world, free utilities, etc.

First Lady is an under rated management position much like stay-at-home Mom. A monetary value should be placed on this important position!
