Interacting: Voting, Commenting, and Conversations
What is "voting" and how do I do it?
One of the many ways Newsvine measures the "interestingness" of content is by keeping track of how many people vote for different articles, seeds, and comments around the site. If you see an article that is interesting or important to you, simply click the little grey upward-facing arrow with the number next to it in the "article toolbar". The article toolbar is the little horizontal box that appears with each article. Additionally, if you see a particularly insightful comment on an article, you can cast a vote for that as well. Votes help determine the placement of content around Newsvine as well as user reputations so vote with both your head and your heart.
Can I also "vote stuff down"?
No. If you don't like an article or a comment, simply don't vote for it. If, however, you see an article or comment that is inappropriate in any way, please click the "!" icon in the article toolbar to report it. Additionally, please do not post comments merely to say "this is lame" or anything else that would otherwise litter comment threads. By adding negative comments to a Newsvine thread, you may unfortunately be increasing the chances of the offending content receiving exposure.
What is the Conversation Tracker and how do I use it?
The Conversation Tracker provides you an easy way to keep track of discussions in comment threads. When a new comment is left on an item you are tracking, you will see the number of such comments on in the Conversation Tracker (located in the green header at the top of the screen). Items in your own column and items you comment on are automatically added to the Conversation Tracker. You can also add an item without commenting by clicking the "Track" button underneath the comment text box. You can clear new items in your conversation tracker by clicking the "x", or you can remove items (and not be further notified of any new comments) by clicking the "stop" icon. There are three types of notifications you’ll receive in the Conversation Tracker: Comments left by others on content in your column, comments left on conversations you've commented on elsewhere around Newsvine, and comments left by your friends.
