Report says Apple to unveil new iPad in March

NEW YORK — A news report says Apple plans to unveil a new iPad early next month.

AllThingsD, a website affiliated with The Wall Street Journal, says Apple Inc. is holding an event in San Francisco the first week of March — the same week Apple announced the iPad 2 last year.

The report cites unnamed people familiar with the device. Apple declined comment Thursday.

It's not known whether the new device will be called the iPad 3, and when it will be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

Since the first iPad came out in 2010, sales of traditional computers have slowed. Rivals PC and phone makers have been unable to mirror Apple's success with their own tablet computers.

Reports also confirm Apple hides behind their supply-chain to utilize child and slave labor to eek out as much profit as possible.

Using Apples products means you are a supporter of child and slave labor !!!

That is what you did I agree.

Of course you would not see taking action against a supporter of child labor and repressive labor practices while said principal beneficiary of those practices rakes in unprecedented profits. At the same time you blame everyone else and rationalize by saying everyone does it and we only followed along with the pack... Convenient. You fail, predictably, consistently... You define your own category.

You fail, predictably, consistently...

You provide one trollish comment and one with little support. I do not blame everyone else. Everyone (inclusive) is part of this issue. I do not think there is a major electronics company that escapes blame. Apple, however, does do supplier audits and does publish their findings. Do any others?

I am not looking to exclude Apple from the discussion. Rather, I find it disingenuous to talk about only Apple. The discussion should include all the major players. Apple may be Foxconn's largest single customer, but they are still minority of Foxconn's total work.

What happens if Apple pulls all manufacturing out of China? Foxconn and other plow along manufacturing for Microsoft, Sony, Nokia, Dell, HP, Samsung and others with nary a blip. Nokia has looking to move even more of their manufacturing to China to reduce costs. Maybe Foxconn lays off some of its workforce. On the other side, Apple places itself at a competitive disadvantage by increasing its costs and increasing its lead time to market.

What happens if Apple pays Foxconn more money presumably to improve the workers pay? Again, Apple increases its costs and places itself at a competitive disadvantage. Foxconn gets more cash which may or may not end up increasing the pay of the ordinary worker.

Obviously, you are quite offended by the labor practices of the electronics companies like Apple. Let me ask you what you have done to affect a better solution. Are you boycotting products built in China? What type of computer do you use? MP3 player? Game console? Television? Cell phone?

Do unions winning pay, working conditions, benefits increases destroy a company? Or by analogy going back a hundred years did they raise the working conditions for all workers.

Your defense of Apple is irrational. Apple can afford a cost increase better than anyone and as a market and industry leader Apple is the most logical place to start. If Apple wants to be a leader (they have said they do) they should act like a leader and use their clout with Foxconn. Conveniently Foxconn has consolidated workers across many US companies so when they increase pay, conditions, benefits for the Apple workers doing the same job as the workers in other parts of the plant it's more likely that the same will be given to other workers and cost distributed accordingly. I find it extremely disingenuous that one would attempt to defend an industry leader by hiding them behind the rest of the pack.

I suspect other companies have published their audits and findings since it was such news that after years of hounding Apple finally did.

Please link to one, just one. My suspicion is that bloggers lay this on Apple because it is great link bait.

This is not a company or even an industry problem. It is the entire Chinese economy and the Chinese government. There is nothing that one company can do to change that other then go broke trying. If we want to improve the lives of the Chinese workers, the place to start is at the national level.

Generally, I am no fan of Paul Krugman, but his reasoning on this topic is very compelling.

In Praise of Cheap Labor: Bad jobs at bad wages are better than no jobs at all.

"Bad jobs at bad wadges are better than no jobs at all"

There's a preposterous proposition foisted by the elite.
